Thursday November 19, 2009 Studio Sessions

Tonight, tonight, tonight, tonight, is going to be something a little different.

See, every week I get about 8 people asking, "So, what have you been listening to lately? Any recommendations?" And, there you have it, tonight's premise for the show. Unfortunately, I only have a 1 hour time slot and, although I'd like to feature about 5-6 more artists into the line up, I'd rather offer a slow/steady sample of a couple different tunes then play one and rush through as many artists as possible. For today, think Rita J, Rideout & Terry Cole, Chief and a couple more.

But don't trip, chocolatechip! This will be a regular/once-a-month feature on the show, so many more of my personal favorites will come your way. As always, keep checking back to the blog for more info and "my finds", pizza recipes, etc.

They call me ES, the overload of Fresh

This is a throw back that's going way back, even before Esoteric ever even touched a mic.

(Note: I can't find a youtube video of the track Esoteric juked the 3XD tag line/post title, but I definitely it exists)

Rita J - Artist Workshop

True Hip-Hop heads can appreciate Rita J's effort & contribution to the Hip-Hop industry.

Rita J. is a fresh young talent from Chicago, IL. Her intelligent, positive raps have been a huge part of her success. Upon her return from college she was introduced to the independent label All Natural Inc. of which whom she's been a member since early 2002. She has been featured on numerous compilations and label mate projects over the years. She was part of the collective Family Tree for a few years honing her skills, studying and gearing up for her debut solo album. "Artist Workshop" her solo effort is slated to be released this fall. "Artist Workshop" has already been released in Japan and is highly anticipated for release in the states!

It is pure, original Hip-Hop in its truest form. Organic, raw, soulful, Rita J. has blessed the mic with some notable people in the industry like DJ Spinna, Digable Planets, J-Live, Jungle Brothers, Stacy Epps, Stahhr the Femcee, Black Spade. Her precise, smooth delivery makes for an easy listen.

I happen to come across Rita J's album, Artist Workshop (2009), last week and downloaded it to satisfy my curiosity. Electronic downloading (waiting in queue, bad files, no password, possibility of wasting perfectly good bandwidth) is about as bad as buying a record you thought was something else but turned out to be another item that's completely what you DIDN'T want. Happily, my bandwidth was NOT wasted and I think I love Rita J. I don't usually like to link artist albums, but you need to know about this girl, like right now.

Remember, if you like it then support the artist! Buy an album, a t-shirt, donate a dollar, go to a show, spread the word, do what you will but don't forget that these people need to make a living, too.

Jazzy Sport Sale

Although I can't understand Japanese, I do know that Jazzy Sport is having a sale to celebrate the record company's 6th Anniversary. Perusing the selection, I came across Jazzcats All Stars - Mix 4.10 and a bunch of Gagle albums I'd never even heard of. U.K. based Juno Records offers a great selection of the JS label, so take a gander and get to some listening. If you're too far away from Japan to visit the shop then you might as well get on some electronic digging.

I'm seriously loving that album cover, too. So simple, but so on point.

C.R.A.C Knuckles

I had no idea these two made a rap video for "Buy Me Lunch." This just makes my night. Maybe now I'll actually get to work? Probably not, way too much youtube for me to plunder.

Side: However, I also had no clue that Aloe Blacc and Ta'raach created a crew called Nathaniel and produced The Fellatio EP... which, when you here the track Lalalalalalalalala kind of makes sense)
